Here we are going to discuss simple past in this third lecture on tenses.

The simple past is the form of tense which is used to describe the things which have already happened in the past. The existence of that particular subject has started in the past.

For example:-

Winx club entered in the basket ball contest.

India won the world cup.

This tense is basically based on past such as somebody got hurt by some thing. We use the present simple while discussing the past state.

Winx club was proud of her basket ball victory.

simple past tense

The formation of past simple is = subject + verb +d,ed,ied

Examples :-

He walked to the college yesterday.

We slept together last night.

In the English language, there are many irregular verb forms that take on a different meaning in the past tense. This form is known as the v2 form in the English language.

Here comes the negative form of simple past.

The negative form of simple past = did not + verb and then the rest of the sentence.

Examples :-

He didn’t walk to the stage yesterday.

I didn’t sleep last night.

I didn’t beat him alone.

He didn’t talk to me yesterday.

Question form of past simple = wh – word + auxiliary  verb + subject + verb form

Examples :-

When did you buy that dress?

When didn’t you tell me that secret?

How long did you sit there near her home?

PAST PROGRESSIVE:

The past progressive is used when the actions were in progress at a special particular time in the past.

Example: Arpita was dancing yesterday evening.

Roshan was reading the book last night.

Sharmistha was studying yesterday morning.

Then another case comes up, where 2 actions were going on simultaneously but they have no effect on each other.

Examples:

Shivangi was reading a book when Pratyasha was writing a story.

Heena was entering the college when the bell ranged.

Amrit was searching for food when Soumya was drinking water.

Case three describes the use of simple past with progressive:-

While we were sitting for a group discussion, the cell phone vibrated.

While we were waiting for the bus, a rickshaw came.

While we were preparing a speech, the event was canceled.

Case four describes negativity by the repeated actions the speaker is irritated which includes the adverbs such as always, constantly, forever etcetera.

Examples:

Sunita was always coming late.

Ananda was always lying to me.

Anish was always a lazy lad.

Affirmative sentences in past progressive:

He was playing basket ball.

He was drinking milk.

Negative sentences in past progressive are:

He wasn’t playing basket ball.

He wasn’t drinking milk.
