Effect of increasing magnetic field on a circular neutral ring


A neutral metallic ring is placed in a circular symmetrical magnetic field with its plane perpendicular to the field. If the magnitude of field starts increasing with time, then:-

(a) The ring starts translating

(b) The ring starts rotating about its axis

(c) The ring slightly contracts

(d) The ring starts rotating about the diameter.

  1. Since magnetic field will increase slowly, so there will be a conductor placed in varying (here increasing) magnetic field, hence current will be induced in that conductor which leads to the generation of force in the conductor.
    Now, since magnetic field and circular conductor are perpendicular to each other, so as per the right-hand thumb rule the magnetic force will be directed along the circumference of the circular conductor.

    Hence the force will contract the conductor.
