so the time taken to go from A to B = x/30

Similarly, the time taken to travel from B to A = x/60.

Total Time taken is = x/30 + x/60 = 3x/60 = x/20

Total distance traveled = x+x = 2x.

So average speed = 2x/(x/20) = 40 mph.
