INTRODUCTION
Nowadays, we can see that our youth is facing difficulties in securing placements or jobs in multinational companies or other types of organizations due to heavy competition. There is a well planned systematic way in which these organizations recruit and select candidates from the pool of resumes. The very first step in getting a job is the application which is usually a resume.
It is the first thing through which an employer interacts with the applicant and if he doesn’t find it up to the mark or accurate then the candidate might be rejected in the first step itself.
Therefore, proper care should be taken while preparing it and it should be based on true and correct facts. Generally, a candidate prepares himself for everything but due to his resume, he fails to go to the next steps of recruitment. So, here we are discussing some key points which will surely help you to prepare an attractive resume.
WHAT IS A RESUME ??
Before learning the preparation, we should be clear that what do we actually mean by word resume.
The word originates from the French word resume which means “summary”.
A resume is a document used and created to present background, skills, and accomplishments. It can be used for a variety of reasons, but most often they are used to secure new employment.
Generally submitted along with a cover letter and application for employment.
It is the first thing through which a person interacts with the potential organization or employer, therefore while preparing a resume, care should be taken and it should not contain bogus information. In addition to that, modify it according to the need and requirements of the organization and should be updated on time to time so that additional information can be inserted or deleted.
WHAT IS COVER LETTER ??
A cover letter is a document in the format of a formal letter sent with the resume to provide additional information on your skills and experience whereas, A resume contains your educational qualifications and achievements in life whereas your cover letter should contain reasons that why you are applying for this job and how you can perform better than others.
A cover letter is different from the resume and it should not contain the same information.
Therefore we can say that a cover letter gives a personal touch and it is also very important as organizations judge personality based on your cover letter, whereas for factual information they refer to resume. And remember cover letter comes before your resume therefore proper care should be taken while preparing the same.
Reasons should be explained properly in the cover letter for your interest in the specific organization and also identify your relevant skills or experience relating to it.
TYPES OF RESUME
There are different types of resume but most commonly used are as follows:
- Chronological
- Functional
- Combination
Chronological Resume
As the name suggests, the chronological type starts by listing your work history, with the most recent position listed first.
Below your most recent job, you list your other jobs in reverse chronological order. Employers generally prefer this type of resume because it’s easy for them to see what jobs you have held and when you have worked at them therefore, this is the most common resume type.
This type of resume works well for job seekers with a strong, solid work history. If you are starting your career, or if you are changing career fields, you might consider a different resume type.
Functional Resume
A functional type focuses on your skills and experience, rather than on your chronological work history. Instead of having a “work history” section at the top of your resume, you might have a “professional experience” or “accomplishments” section that lists various skills you have developed over the years.
A functional resume also sometimes includes a summary or headline at the top, which details a person’s skills and achievements. It might not include one’s employment history at all or might have a concise list of work history at the bottom.
Combination Resume
A combination type is a mix between a chronological resume and a functional. At the top of the resume is a list of one’s skills and qualifications. Below this is one’s chronological work history. However, the work history is not the focus of the resume and typically does not take up much space.
With this type further you can highlight the skills you have that are relevant to the job you are applying for, as well as provide your chronological work history. After all, most employers want to see your chronological work history, even if that history is not very extensive.
This kind helps you highlight what makes you the best fit for the job, as well as giving the employer all the information.
