We have heard about different types of refreshing drinks. Coffee and tea are among the most famous refreshing drink around the globe. In this article, we are going to talk about the Kopi Luwak, most expansive coffee in the world.
Before you pronounce it as Kopi Luwak, I will be happy to tell you that it is an Indonesian word and its pronunciation is “kopi ˈlu.a”.
Before starting, let me clear you the one thing which is that Kopi Luwak is nothing but a type of coffee and the special thing about this is its price as well the method of production which we will discuss later on in this article.
Method of production
As shown in the above illustration, fresh coffee beans or seeds are collected from the coffee tree. Palm cats which are also known as civet cats are fond of ripest coffee cherries or we can say coffee seeds. As these coffee cherries digested in the stomach of Palm cats, the pulpy part of cherries gets digested whereas coffee beans do not get digested. During digestion inside the stomach of the mammal, special fermentation process occurs, which gives coffee a special flavor. After digestion, the undigested coffee beans are excreted by the civet cat. The coffee beans found in the excretion of civet cat are collected and processed into coffee.
So basically, civet cat is the mammal which gives coffee beans special taste and makes it special coffee.
Interestingly, this coffee is also known by these names
- Cat poop Coffee
- Civet Cat Coffee
This uncommon method of production makes this coffee the most expansive coffee in the world.
Bad Side of Kopi Luwak
For the production of Kopi Luwak, civet cats are kept in small cages and forced to eat coffee berries. For increasing production, unripened coffee berries are also given to poor creatures to eat and this makes them ill. This illness is usually evidenced by bloody excreta and once the bleeding started, it becomes too late to save them.
To sum up, kopi luwak cage farming is cruelty to the civet cats.
