ICAR – A Career Option In Agriculture
ICAR stands for Indian Council of Agriculture Research and it is an organisation which promotes research in agriculture and agriculture related subjects except for veterinary science. ICAR colleges in India accept admission in its various undergraduate, Post Graduate and Doctoral courses. For admissions in colleges linked to ICAR, ICAR organises an exam named AIEEA-UG and AIEEA-PG every year. ICAR exam is an All India entrance exam for admission in undergraduate and postgraduate degree programs in Agriculture and its allied subjects except veterinary science in various Agriculture universities and this exam is conducted by Indian Council of Agriculture Research (ICAR) every year.
Various state-based agriculture universities and ICAR deemed to be universities accept admission into their UG and PG courses on the basis of scorecard of ICAR entrance exam. Candidates from all the states and all the examination boards i.e. CBSE, ICSE and other state boards can appear for the ICAR exam for admission into ICAR colleges for higher studies in the field of agriculture science. The applications are invited generally in the second week of April every year and the test is generally held every year in the month of June.
ICAR Colleges
Through ICAR entrance exam, 100% seats of ICAR deemed universities are filled however only 15 % seats of state-based agriculture universities are filled with this exam.
There are 4 ICAR deemed universities which are given below. Admissions in these universities are taken through ICAR entrance exam only.
- NDRI – National Dairy Research Institute, Karnal, Haryana
- IVRI – Indian Veterinary Research Institute, Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh
- IARI – Indian Agriculture Research Institute, New Delhi
- CIFE – Central Institute of Fisheries Education, Mumbai
Apart from these 4 deemed universities of ICAR, there are 62 specialised institutions, 14 national research centres, 6 National Bureaux, 14 project directories directly functioning under the guidance of ICAR. Additionally, ICAR also supports 69 state agricultural universities, one central agricultural university, 261 Krishi Vigyan Kendras (farm clinics) and eight trainers training centres. Apart from this, there are various colleges in Maharashtra, Tamilnadu and Chhattisgarh where 20 to 50% seats for graduation courses in agriculture science are filled up by ICAR entrance exam.

~About ICAR~
The Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) is an autonomous body responsible for coordinating agricultural education and research in India. It reports to the Department of Agricultural Research and Education, Ministry of Agriculture. The Union Minister of Agriculture serves as its president. It is the largest network of agricultural research and education institutes in the world.
- As of July 2006, it has developed a vaccine against bird flu. The vaccine was developed at the High-Security Animal Disease Laboratory, Bhopal, the only facility in the country to conduct tests for the H5N1 variant of bird flu. It was entrusted with the task of developing a vaccine by the ICAR after the Avian Influenza outbreak in February. The ICAR provided Rs. 8 Crore for the purpose.
- ICAR scientists were the first in the world to sequence the pigeon pea genome. it was a purely indigenous effort by 31 scientists led by Nagendra Kumar Singh of NRCPB.
